Kasheera is another YouTube vlogger extraordinaire that I had the pleasure of meeting when she moved to out California. I was already subscribed to her channel so it was nice to meet her in person and to learn about her natural hair journey.
How long have you been natural?
I've been natural for 4 years and 8 months!
What made you decide to go natural?
At the time I was living in a predominantly White area and there were no Black hair salons around. I started straightening my hair by myself but as my roots grew in, my hair kept getting bigger and bigger. Then one day I started thinking about why I relaxed my hair anyway, so I did a Google search on "black women and relaxers" and a forum on black women and self hate came up. As I looked over the different responses in the forum I thought to myself well I don't hate myself but then I also still couldn't answer the question of why I was relaxing my hair. It just seemed like something I was used to doing and never considered anything else.
So after giving natural much thought as well as finding a whole community of naturalistas on YouTube, I decided to do away with perms and go natural!
How long did you transition or big chop?
I transitioned for 18 months and transition chopped in Oct. of 2010. Dealing with the two textures was definitely a lot of work. I don't know why I waited so long.
What was your families’ / friend’s reaction to you going natural?
Well, my family didn't understand why I wanted to go natural at first, I got a couple responses like, "Why you wanna walk around with nappy hair?" But overtime they've come to embrace my decision, they are always complimenting my hair now! Now if only I can get some of my sisters to go natural next. lol
Anything surprise you?
Well, I've always had thick hair even when I was relaxed, but I can really see the thickness after going natural. People tell me all the time they wish they had thicker hair but it's definitely more work. Hey I say love what you have! I've received so much positive feedback from all kinds of people. When I go from a wash and go to a twist out, people are so confused as to why my hair looks so different. I think it's hilarious!
What would you say to someone that is considering going natural?
I say do it, and especially do it with confidence. I can't tell you how much wasted emotional energy I've spent worrying about what other people would think or whether I would still be beautiful. I had nothing to worry about. This is the hair we are born with and the way it was meant to be. There is absolutely nothing wrong with embracing it, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
What are your hair goals for the next 6 months to year?
Actually, I'm about to do a 4 month hair growth challenge. A few years ago during my relaxing days I used a home relaxing kit, it must've gone bad because as I went to shampoo it out I could see my hair coming out. After it was blown out and flat ironed it looked really fragile. Over the course of about 2 weeks, the hair from the top back of my hair all the way down gradually started falling out, until the entire top and back of my hair was half an inch short. I went from like 16 inches to an inch. However the front of my hair wasn't affected at all. I've noticed on my journey that the back of my hair doesn't grow as fast, the front is at 18in and the back at only 14in. So I'm going to be exploring all the tips and tricks to jumpstart my hair growth particularly in the back of my hair but all around as well. I'm going to be doing DC treatments, hot oil treatment and also trying out black castor oil. Check my channel to join in on the challenge!!
How did you get started making YouTube videos?
I actually started singing covers on my YouTube channel but after I went natural the hair journey kind of took over. lol

I love it! I wish I'd gotten the memo that it does get a little chilly in the winter though as I left all of my winter clothing and coats at home thinking it would be paradise all year. lol I love how spacious it is and I'm a foodie so I love the variety of food options!
